“Grandma used to wear this ring with birthstones of every month on it. Every time I would visit her, she would go through each month of the birthstone and tell me everybody’s birthday of that month. Not only would it be her kids, but also all her grandkids. It would amaze me that she could remember everybody’s birthday.”

“When I was about 3 years old, Fedelina came to visit our family in Santa Fe, New Mexico. At the time, my father was going to school, and we did not have a lot of money. Fedelina tried giving my father some money, but he refused it. Just before leaving our house, Fedelina gave me a $20 and told me that the ‘2’ on the bill meant that it was not that much money, and I should give it to my father for his birthday. I did as she suggested — and we were able to eat filet mignon for my father’s birthday.”
