Mia May was born Maria Pfleger, on June 12, 1884, in Vienna, Austria, and died on April 28, 1980, in Los Angeles, CA.
Married to director/producer/writer Joe May, Mia was one of Germany’s most prominent leading ladies in silent films – at one point rivaling Asta Nielsen in popularity.
May began her career on the stage at the age of 14, using the name Herma Angelot; she changed her name to Mia May in 1902. Her husband liked the new surname so well, he changed his name to Joe May. She retired from films in 1924, upon the suicide of her daughter, actress Eva May.
Upon moving to Hollywood, Mia appeared in a handful of films, before retiring in 1943.
