Continued Rest Maila
Like sands through the hourglass, so are the past twelve years of our lives. Continued eternal rest on the 12th anniversary of your passing Maila Nurmi, aka Vampira.

Maila Nurmi
As a little boy, I knew Criswell. He lived in the penthouse above me at the Highland Tower apartments. Although only 4 years old, I remember his white hair. I also remember his guests who came over.. among them were Ed Wood and Maila Nurmi. She was striking in those days.. and unforgettable. My single mother would eventually be a minor player in one of Ed’s productions and we would see Ms. Nurmi at Nickodells or the Brown Derby. She was lovely, elegant and I will miss this incredible lady. I wanted to remember her… your video and photos really brought her essence back to my memory. Thanks!

Remembering Maila
Maila, though the times we spent together were all too few and far between, I will always treasure them. I regret not contacting you in the past few years–life is so fleeting, but I thought you were immortal. You had such a strong will, such a force of life driving you, I thought you of all people could play the coquette with Death and perennially keep him blindfolded. I smile when I think of your fierce eccentricity–there’s no one else like you around anymore–no one to hold court at El Coyote, telling tales of the days of Orson Welles and James Dean, railing against over-CGI’d films, musing on psychic vision and philosophy, all with your sharp wit and ever-enchanting beauty and flair. You were Vampira, but few know that you were also Tinker Bell, the blonde, mercurial pixie–at once flirtatious and haughty, but always sprinking pixie dust wherever she went. I admired your iconoclasm, your personal style and panache, your kindness to animals, the homeless and those in need, your self-deprecating humor and your relentless elegance. I was first enraptured by you as Vampira, with your fierce gothic beauty and tiny waist, but I truly loved you as a person, you, Maila Elizabeth Nurmi. May you rest in eternal peace.
