Father Enda Heffernan

1932 - 2001

Father Enda Heffernan, O.F.M. Cap, was born on March 17 (St. Patrick’s Day), 1932, in Turner’s Cross, Cork City, Ireland, to John Heffernan and Margaret Morey. He was the loving brother of Mrs. Eileen Stoker, Miss Marie Heffernan, Brother Adrian Heffernan, F.S.C., Mrs. Phil Burns, Mr. George Heffernan, Mrs. Veronica O’Sullivan, and the late Father Roderick Heffernan, O.F.M. Cap.

Fr. Enda was a Capuchin Franciscan Friar for 52 years. He was ordained a Priest on May 30, 1957. He was a Parish Priest at St. Mary’s Church in Ukiah, CA. He was Pastor at Our Lady of Angels Church in Burlingame, CA. He was Vice Provincial or the Vice Province of the Irish Province of St. Patrick. He was the first Provincial of Our Lady of Angels Province. He was Postulant Director at San Buenaventura Friary in San Francisco, CA. He was Novice Master and Guardian at San Lorenzo Seminary in Santa Ynez, CA. He dedicated his last years to retreat ministry, while living at St. Francis Friary in Burlingame, CA.

Fr. Enda was a man of great dedication and great compassion. He touched many lives, and ended his days in great peace, from a sense of tremendous satisfaction at what God had accomplished through His humble instrument. He died at the age of 69.

Our Lady of Angels Church, in Burlingame, CA, Wednesday, May 2, 2001, at 7:30pm.

Mass of Christian Burial:
Old Mission Santa Ines, in Solvang, CA, Friday, May 4, 2001, at 12 noon.

Burial:
San Lorenzo Seminary, Santa Ynez, CA.

    To the friars in California who created this wonderful tribute to my dear uncle Gabriel known to you as Fr Enda Heffernan, thank you on behalf of all my family. I have shared the link on this St Patrick’s Day, 2020 the anniversary of his birthday, bringing great joy to our family in the shadow of COVID-19 which is dominating all our thoughts.
