Clara Belle Palmer Frost

1874 - 1962

Born September 4, 1874. Died March 14, 1962.

Clara attended grammar school at Canaan Four Corners, New York State; Northfield Seminary, Northfield, Massachusetts, and Albany Normal College, Albany, New York, graduating with a Bachelor of Pedagogy degree. She taught for several years, and then took Domestic Science and Household Economics at Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, New York. She received a Bachelor of Science degree from Columbia Teacher’s College, NY, and tutored in New York City.

Clara came to Hollywood in 1911, as a substitute in charge of Domestic Science and Household Economics at the State School in San Luis Obispo, for one year. She then organized the Department of Domestic Science and Household Economics at the State Normal School in Los Angeles (now U.C.L.A., on Vermont Avenue), planning the buildings under Dr. Jesse Millspaugh, and developing Teachers Training.

About 1903, Clara took a hiking trip through England and Scotland, and in 1924, she spent six months on the Continent.

On July 1, 1915, Clara married Lowell Chester Frost, MD. She and Lowell lived in Hollywood during their later years. Lowell was the head of the Science department in the Beverly Hills High School.
